Hotel Leaders Network Conference Student Challenge

14 October 2014

On 19 September 2014, HTH (AMS) was hosting the Hospitality Leaders Network Conference. Prior to this conference, students from Glion, Les Roches, HK Polytech, Maastricht and HTH participated in a student challenge.

The students were challenged to develop a new concept for the Palace of Justice in Amsterdam which is currently for sale. In mixed teams, they had to come up with a creative and feasible concept. The students were coached by various colleagues and external advisors (Mr. Vincent and Mr. Roersma) and were given master classes on feasibility, pitching and finance. After two intensive days, three teams were selected to mpresent their final concept to CEO’s and Top Executives of Marriot, NH, Accor, Rezidor and Starwood on Friday morning. They were asked critical questions and gave feedback. After an intensive discussion, Team 1 with their concept: “Amsterdam Live: taste, breathe, life Amsterdam”, was announced as the winner. The winning team consisted out of Grisha (Glion), Yutong Meng (HK Polytech), Gulia (Les Roches) and Lotte (HTH/AM).

The case:

A historical, 50.000 square meter building located at the Prinsengracht, in the most vibrant part of the city of Amsterdam. The assignment: Create an innovative, unique and financially feasible luxury hotelconcept. A short description of what the student challenge of the Hotel Leaders Network Conference entailed. After visiting the magnificent property of the former Palace of Justice on Wednesday afternoon, the international teams could not have been more eager to start the ideation sessions. Students of Hotelschools Glion, Les Roches, Hong Kong, Maastricht and The Hague were formed in mixed teams beforehand and absolutely ready to rumble. The individual concepts that were created prior to the conference, were discussed, combined and optimised within the five different teams. The next day, on Thursday (after a very limited time of sleep), a masterclass on financial feasibility in concept development was provided by the founders of Hotels Ahead, the brains behind a.o. CitizenM. Provided with insights, the paticipants were able to assess the financial feasibility of the created concepts. During the brainstorm sessions industry professionals and lecturers coached the students.

After an inspiring pitching masterclass Thursday evening, the students presented the concept to the jury of industry specialists and teachers, where after 3 teams were picked as winners. During the morning program, HLNC invited general managers, regional directors and CEO's of the hospitality industry to watch the three different pitches. It was a real pleasure for the students to present to this great representation of hotel leaders. Top Executives of Marriot, NH, Accor, Rezidor and Starwood asked the students critical questions and provided us with feedback.
