Summary of 85th anniversary

11 December 2014

With pleasure and pride we look back on the 85th Anniversary festivities.

Thanks to all of you these festivities have been a great opportunity to look back and celebrate our legacy whilst looking at the future of Hotelschool The Hague. A special thank you to all the Alumni who have been involved in making these festivities a grand success!

The celebrations kicked off on Friday 14 November 2014 with Hotelschool The Hague Talks; Ronald van den Hoff, Hans Steenbergen, Diana van Roest and Gillian Tans. They presented new trends in society, food, travel and distribution. HTH Talks was organised to explore future trends and developments, which can be translated into consequences for the curriculum of the future.

The festivities continued Saturday 15 November 2014 with the Taste of Hotelschool The Hague; celebrating our students and talented Alumni, Hospitality Leaders and Hospitality Entrepreneurs, showcasing their passion for hospitality, by bringing their entrepreneurial concepts to Hotelschool The Hague. Firstly, we kicked off the celebration with a Wine & Spice Workshop from the GM of ‘Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg’ and HMC President, Bernard Lensink and Alain Alders (head Chef Vrienden van Jacob) together with Xavier Kat from Okhuysen. Simultaneously, Cocktail specialist, Andrew Nicholls presented us with the “Taste of Rum – A Caribbean Tour”. This was followed by another Chef’s Theatre with Joris Bijdendijk, who just opened restaurant RIJKS in the Rijksmuseum. For this occasion he teamed up with one of the Comitas Founders, Martijn Kwast from Kwast Wijnkopers and Vivian van Hees-Onel from Amsterdam’s famous, Pasta e Basta.  Simultaneously, Gregor Christiaans, gave a workshop on his passion, olive oil. Our final Chef’s Theatre was with the first Dutch Masterchef Winner Sascha de Lint of GreenAge, who gave us a great workshop with Ibert van der Waal from Wijnimport J. Bart.

Not only the workshops were a great success: outside, there were a number of rolling kitchens; Jord Althuizen with his Smokey Goodness BBQ Concept. Hein Kitschmann; started his Kitschmann Currywurst concept at the age of 61 years, after visiting his son on his internship in Berlin. Our alumni Riad Farhat featuring his The Biertuin. Riad currently has a number of food and beverage concepts in Amsterdam including the Maxwell Cafe and Waterkant. Our dear neighbours Ramada Floor 17, Amsterdam featured their hot dog stand, and Simon Spanjer from Restaurant De Kraai, presented his delicious Dutch pancakes.

Other Alumni used The Mangerie kitchen to showcase their concepts; Philip Paternotte from Grizzl; Laurens van Luin, with his concept Manic Organic; Richard van Leeuwen, owner of The Harbour Club, showcasing the Oyster Bar. In Les Saveurs, Mark Horné from Quality Bartending prepared delicious cocktails and Florian Stallinga, who is co-owner of Hugo’s, prepared gorgeous Gin/Tonics. Marloes de Bruijn, of Kruid and Druif, and Dirk Karsten, from Karsten and Kuiper who specialise in international dishes presented their exciting concepts as well. Sustainability is very important for us at Hotelschool The Hague and we are pleased to be able to partner with Thomas Kasha from SD Trading, who specialises in sustainability for the hospitality industry and Lucas Schopman, with his Earth Water concept.

Not only Alumni, but also current HTH students showed their entrepreneurial character: Sylvie Meijer, from Zensy Bar, showing her ice cream concept, Tim Conyn & Yaron Menneken, from Caipi Boys, preparing cocktails, and Matthias Schenek, representing his placement company Das Eis.

A big thank you is also in place to the Ramada GM, Alumnus, Boudewijn Martens, who hosted the Alumni After party.

Last but not least, thank you to Alumnus, Henk-Jan Kakebeen, from Goal Getters, who eagerly offered his support when the idea for The Taste of Hotelschool The Hague, was still in concept, and Maarten Vooijs, who started with The Hospitalitist after his first traineeship and provided several staffmembers  to support the evening.

Make sure you read the amazing stories of these Alumni in the Taste of HTH Magazine.

We look forward in celebrating the next anniversary with you!
